Esplanade to build bigger $6m outdoor theatre

THE Esplanade Co Ltd announced yesterday that it will demolish its existing waterfront outdoor theatre to make way for a new $6 million one which will be four times bigger. Land will be reclaimed to extend the new theatre towards the sea.

'With the large crowds it draws every weekend and during our festivals, it's clear that we have outgrown the space,' said Ravi Sivalingam, spokesman for The Esplanade.

The Esplanade is keen to preserve the 'open concept' and 'sail design' of the theatre by the bay where free performances are given, while increasing the size of the shelter to minimise cancellations when there are drizzles.

The new outdoor theatre, which is slated to be ready by mid-December, will feature steps built downwards into the bay to create building and water integration similar to places like Clarke Quay.

Seating capacity will be doubled and the stage size will be increased two-and-a-half times. There will be seats for 400 and specially designed standing room for about 650. The Esplanade said that it wants the outdoor theatre to maintain its casual atmosphere, where most people stop to enjoy performances while strolling in the waterfront area. The new stage will continue to showcase budding musicians. 'Our main aim is still to allow the uninitiated to enjoy the arts and for people to enjoy the waterfront,' said Mr Sivalingam.

With the integrated resort, the Singapore Flyer and the Marina Bay Floating Stadium opening over the next few years, The Esplanade believes that the new waterfront theatre will experience even higher visitor traffic than the current estimated 500 per weekend night. While the outdoor theatre is closed for construction work, performers will use a temporary stage which has been erected further along the waterfront next to Glutton's Bay.
